FAQ:  Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a library card?

Library cards are available free of charge to any resident of Georgia. A resident is a person who can provide acceptable evidence of a permanent mailing address in one of 159 counties of Georgia. When proof of residence is established, the library user will be issued a library card.

Each of the following items, IF CONTAINING A MAILING ADDRESS WITHIN THE STATE OF GEORGIA, is acceptable proof of legal residency:

  • Valid Georgia driver's license

  • Valid Georgia voter registration card

  • Checkbook with imprinted mailing address

  • Recent utility or telephone bill

  • Recent cancelled letter

  • Current property tax receipt

An entire family may register on the identification of one adult member of the family. These registrations must be completed at the same time.

Children:  Children age 5 and above who are able to write their name are eligible to receive their own library card.  A parent or legal guardian must come into the library with the child to sign an application for a child 15 years old or younger.  A child that is between the ages of 16 and 18 may sign an application for their own library card.  However, in order to have Internet access, a parent must sign the application form.   The parent or legal guardian that signs a child's library card application is ultimately responsible for all overdue materials, fines, and replacement costs for all lost materials.

Library cards issued by any of the public libraries within the PINES System will be honored by all the libraries within the PINES System.

How old do you have to be to have a library card?

You must be at least 5 years old to get a library card.    At 16 years of age you can get a library card without a parent signature, but you must be 18 years old to sign for Internet access without a parent signature.

Can I renew my books by phone?

Yes!  Library materials can be renewed if no other borrower has requested their use.  Renewals can be made in person at the Circulation Desk or by calling on the telephone.  Please have your library card available for faster service.

And don't forget!  Now you can also renew library materials over the Internet.

What is the charge if materials are overdue?

Fines on all library items are $0.10 per item per day.

Where do I return my books when the library is not open?

All the libraries have book drops where you can return books when the library is not open.

Can I check out books or use the computers if I forget my library card?

No.  You must always bring your PINES card with you to the Library if you plan to check out books or use a library computer.
